![]() ![]() student studying abroad in Paris, inserts himself into the middle, and when he receives early indications that portend the depth of the relationship between the twins, he does not run away. The twins, Isabelle and Theo, are almost as close to each other in young adulthood as they were during the nine months they spent together in their mother's womb. The relationship between the three main characters is unlike anything that I've ever seen portrayed on film. Some may think it a shame that the dreamers fail, but others like myself will view it as something that has to happen, if the dream is unrealistic and unsustainable. The film ends before resolving the outcome of the second set of dreamers, but we all know our history. `The Dreamers' focuses more on the former than the latter, and Bernardo Bertolucci is careful to leave his film open to interpretation, but ultimately the dream world of the three main characters is shattered by the realities of life. In some ways, this is a return by Bertolucci to the erotic mood of Last Tango In Paris, but strangely enough – given that he himself was a young man in Paris at the time, he seems to be on less certain ground when he examines the strikes that convulsed France in the summer of 1968 the conclusion, especially, has a hollow ring, given what's gone before. My rating: 6/10 There are two types of dreamers in `The Dreamers': the three main characters, who create their own interior world and prefer to view the outside world by watching classic 1930s cinema and the socialist street revolutionaries of riot-torn 1968 Paris, who attempt to overthrow the political and economic power structure. The Dreamers is scripted by Gilbert Adair from his own book, and it's nothing if not authentic in its recreation of that wild time when young people discovered sexual freedom, cinema and politics all at the same time.ĭebates about the Vietnam War and Chairman Mao are followed by analyses of the films that impacted on this generation, and there are lots of film clips to remind us what those seminal films were – there's even a scene in which the trio dash through the Louvre just like the threesome in Jean-Luc Godard's Bande A Part. ![]() When their parents go away, Isabelle and Theo invite Matthew to move in with them, and at first the American is taken aback at the free and easy lifestyle he encounters, a lifestyle that moves more and more into the realm of the senses. ![]() While debating the merits of Hollywood directors like Sam Fuller and Nicholas Ray, the three become good friends. Matthew ( Michael Pitt), a young American student, hangs out at the famous film museum, the Cinematheque Francaise, and, during the demonstrations protesting the dismissal of the Cinematheque's Director, Henri Langlois, meets Isabelle ( Eva Green), and her brother, Theo ( Louis Garrel). ![]()
